= Installing the Landscape client =

Before you can start managing a particular computer using Landscape, you need to install the Landscape client software on that computer.

It takes no more than a couple of minutes for

 It's easy to do and the Landscape client is free software (licensed under the GPLv2).

Exactly which steps you take to install the client depends on the version of Ubuntu running on the computer you want to manage.

== Ubuntu 8.10 and newer ==

'''Step 1:''' Open a terminal and type:

{{{
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install landscape-client
}}}

When prompted, enter your password.

'''Step 2:''' Once Ubuntu has installed the Landscape client, type:

{{{
sudo landscape-config
}}}

'''Step 3:''' The Landscape client will now ask you a series of questions. Most are straightforward but you should bear the following in mind:

 * For now, you don't need to enter an account registration password.
 * You should decide whether you want to use Landscape to remotely run scripts on this computer in future: the only way to change your mind is to re-configure the Landscape client directly on the computer.
 * If this is the first time you've set up the Landscape client on this computer, you should request a new registration. Otherwise, answer "no".

== Ubuntu 8.04 and older ==

The Landscape client isn't distributed directly with Ubuntu 8.04 and older. That's no problem, though: you simply need to add the Landscape software archive to the computer.

'''Step 1:''' Open a terminal and enter:

{{{
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
}}}

Enter your user password on that machine when prompted. When the file is open in the editor, add the following line:

{{{
deb http://landscape.canonical.com/packages/<distro-name> ./
}}}

'''Note:''' you need to replace ```<distro-name>``` with the code name of the version of Ubuntu that's running on that machine.

|| '''Ubuntu version''' || '''Release code name''' ||
|| 8.04 || hardy ||
|| 7.10 || gutsy ||
|| 6.06 || edgy ||

'''Step 2:''' So that the computer can verify the authenticty of the packages in the Landscape software archive, you need to download the archive's public key. In the terminal, type:

{{{
gpg --keyserver-options http-proxy --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key C605E80D
gpg --armor --export C605E80D | sudo apt-key add -
}}}

'''Step 3:''' Download information about the packages in the Landscape software archive and then install the Landscape client by entering the following in the terminal:

{{{
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install landscape-client
}}}

'''Step 4:''' The Landscape client will now ask you a series of questions.

== Next step ==

Once installed and set up, the Landscape client will send hardware and software configuration information to your account on the Landscape server.

If there's more than one of you who'll be managing the computers in this Landscape account, you'll want to give the other people their own logins. Find out [[GettingStarted/AddingAdministrators|show to add administrators to your account]].
